Cut a mountain- dig a hole, Climb up the dark side of the Moon-dig up another hole; Dig and dig deeper as though everything below us belongs to us.
Humans, through the ages, at the expense of the environment, other humans, small and big, have run in an unceasing war to obtain the precious metals safely tucked in the layers of Earth. Although progress and the greed for precious ores may look lucrative at first, this invasive human activity is a simple call for doomsday.
For this installation, ‘Slithering Greed’, copper is multitudinous. Firstly, its luster acts as a visual metaphor for how the shine of stones and metals on Earth’s surface attracts humans. Secondly, the conductive property of copper adds a metaphorical aspect to the installation, where it denies being touched or controlled by the external environment, as it can harm them in return. Furthermore, the malleability of copper wires allowed me to weave a flowy structure, which is boundless and adds movement, just like the greed of humans and their willingness to keep going and digging.
